Periphery on Main, a new American restaurant located in the historic Monte Vista neighborhood of San Antonio, was a casual space that aimed to be a neighborhood restaurant serving simple, honest and approachable food and drink. Drawing inspiration from Italy and the American South, with a hint of smoky flavors, Periphery offered a fresh and flavorful dining experience. Unfortunately, as of now, this business has been permanently closed.

Polenta crusted pimento cheese with bacon jam on the day we opened (four years ago today) evolved into what it was when we decided to step away. I really can’t believe I sent something to a table looking like that 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♀️🤪Small tweaks can = big improvement!

So I can’t say enough about the ladies running in Alamo heights by central market. Small woman owned business where your dollar means a ton! Every week or two I grab a small bouquet that just pops with personality. In these times flowers are perfect for a quick pick me up!

It said it was 106 outside today so this is was more than appropriate to quench a thirst . We served this at the restaurant and I’m still drinking it today. is making some of the best stuff in Texas and you can find it

Proper plates of takeout tend to not look great for pictures on social media but this collection of flavor bombs from .sanantonio probably tastes better than all that pretty food anyway. The twice fried tofu in bacon dashi and red snapper with anchovy butter were especially delicious.

Another proper plate of takeout food. My good friends at make delicious food on many levels and this pandemic has veered them into a seemingly simpler direction but complex flavor doesn’t always equate to complex appearance. Those guys are a wealth of knowledge about the breadth of diversity in Mexican cuisine. If you’re into history and travel and flavor and exploration they are a tremendous asset. Go support them and eat tacos.

There’s obviously a theme and we support them often but dining in for the first time in months felt important even if it was only lunch. They absolutely crush the veggie game and support local farmers and ranchers. Go show them some love. Also your delicious chansa sherry makes an appearance.

Another proper plate of takeout; this was a fried chicken dinner from last week that absolutely crushed. I usually post these pretty quick but there has been a lot that has gone on in society since this picture and I had to gather my thoughts. It’s pretty simple though, nothing touches everyone’s life more than the food we eat and nothing has its tentacles in every facet of our society more than the breadth of the food system. There is a tremendous amount of injustice we don’t typically realize in the food we eat so if you want to start exerting real change, start with what’s on your plate. Support local and support local restaurants who, at the very least, source some real food from local farmers and ranchers. If you’re at all interested in the environment or the health care system or generational poverty or animal welfare or politics or supporting local or any number of other things start with food.

So I snapped this picture of the last chicken we sent out tonight. No good lighting, no garnish but a massive amount of work has gone into getting this right and consistent every time. Its the dish that ended up defining us so I suppose it was proper to snap one last picture to use in announcing we aren’t going to quite be able to make it to the end of the year. Thanks to all of you for supporting us and your generosity. Go support your small local neighborhood spots.... they are important.
