Exactly this. Sometimes spay-abort is the humane thing.

Exactly this. Sometimes spay-abort is the humane thing.

THIS is why. 💔

This is why we do spay-aborts.

This is why, when someone finds a pregnant stray dog, we tell them to call Animal Care Services instead of leaving her on the street because they feel bad about her going to the shelter.

This mama was wandering a neighborhood in South Texas. Someone was kind enough to let her stay in their backyard.

She gave birth to 10 puppies.

Seven of them died.

Now the three surviving puppies are six weeks old, have worms, and the person who tried to help is desperately posting on a “help these dogs” page because they don’t have the money to care for them.

This is the reality people don’t see.

When we choose to spay-abort a pregnant dog, people sometimes think, But what about the puppies?

THIS is what we’re thinking about.

We’re thinking about puppies being born outside.

We’re thinking about parasites, parvo, starvation, heat, cold, predators and disease.

We’re thinking about the seven puppies in this litter who were born and died.

We’re thinking about the thousands of puppies who are already here and desperately need somewhere to go.

And we’re thinking about that mama dog, whose body had to grow, deliver and nurse ten puppies while she was homeless herself.

Spay-abort isn’t something we celebrate. It’s a decision made because we understand what happens when there aren’t enough homes, fosters, money or resources for the animals already here.

And leaving a stray dog on the street because taking her to Animal Care Services feels “mean” isn’t necessarily saving her.

Sometimes the thing that feels kinder in the moment creates far more suffering later.

Animal welfare isn’t always pretty. Sometimes loving animals means making decisions that hurt our human hearts because we’ve seen what the alternative looks like.

This is the alternative.

Ten puppies born.
Seven puppies dead.
Three puppies with worms.
One exhausted mama.
And another person begging rescue groups for help.

This is why. 💔
