Devotional: “They Came with Haste” By Eld. George Walker
Luke 2:16–20 (KJV)
The shepherds did not hesitate when they heard the good news—they came with haste. Ordinary men, tending ordinary sheep, were invited into an extraordinary moment. They found exactly what God promised: Mary, Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. This reminds us that God keeps His word, even when the setting seems humble and unexpected.
After seeing Jesus, the shepherds could not keep the news to themselves. They spoke boldly about what had been revealed to them, and those who heard were filled with wonder. A true encounter with Christ always creates movement—first inward belief, then outward testimony. When God shows us something sacred, He intends for it to be shared.
Mary’s response was different but equally powerful. While others spoke, she pondered. She held the moment close, treasuring God’s work in her heart. This teaches us that faith includes both proclamation and reflection. Some seasons call us to speak loudly; others call us to listen deeply and trust quietly.
The shepherds returned to their fields changed. They went back to the same jobs, the same responsibilities—but with new joy, new praise, and a new understanding of God’s goodness. An encounter with Jesus doesn’t remove us from our lives; it transforms how we live them.

Let us Pray
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for revealing Your Son to humble hearts. Help us to respond like the shepherds—quick to obey, eager to seek You, and bold to share what You have shown us. Teach us also to be like Mary, treasuring Your promises and trusting Your plan even when we do not fully understand it.
Fill our hearts with praise, and let our lives reflect the joy of knowing Christ. May we return to our daily lives changed, glorifying You in all we say and do.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
